Dragons Sweep UMES In Softball Doubleheader

Princess Anne, Md. - Drexel (8-4, 2-1 CAA) won a pair of games againt the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2-13) in convincing fashion to extend its season-best win streak to four games. Two-time defending CAA Rookie of the Week Katrina Gaudier picked up her fifth win of the season in a 14-2 game one trouncing and sophomore Amanda Shattuck garnered her first win of the season in Drexel's 14-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game One
Drexel took advantage of three UMES errors to score five runs in the first inning of game one. The Dragons never looked back from there, crusing to a 14-2 victory in five innings. Katrina Gaudier scattered seven hits and allowed two runs while striking out two batters in a complete-game performance for her team-leading fifth win of the season.
Christina Rodriguez broke the game open in Drexel's six-run fourth inning with a bases-clearing double. Molly Dacey and Brianne Brown each drove in two runs and Lisa Williams scored a pair of runs and stole two bases after drawing three walks in the game. Junior Amanda Hastings also got herself on track in the game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles which tied a single-game record most recently reached by Ashlee Veilleux last season.
The Hawks led off the bottom of the fifth with a pair of singles, but Gaudier retured the next three batters in order to end the game after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Game Two
Molly Dacey contuinued her hot hitting against UMES, going 2-for-4 from the plate and driving in five runs. Four of Dacey's RBIs came in Drexel's nine-run seventh innings. Dacey plated Brianne Brown with a double to open scoring in the seventh. She also plated Drexel's last three runs in the big inning with a three-run home run as Drexel sent 12 batters to the plate before the Hawks could put out the fire. Dacey's five RBIs is the most she's had in one game since setting a single game record with eight against UMES on April 20, 2006.
From the circle, Amanda Shattuck threw one of her most dominant outings as a Dragon. The sophomore from Rhode Island allowed just two hits in seven innings of work and struck out a career-high eight batters to earn her first win of the season.
Christina Rodriguez also continued her barrage against UMES in game two. She went 3-for-4 and fell only a home run short of hitting for the cycle. Sandi Wambold drovein a pair of runs while going 2-for-4 and she also hit her first home run of the season.
The Dragons have won seven of their last eight games and enter the weekend CAA series against UNC Wilmington with an 8-4 record and a 2-1 mark in conference play. After a dozen games this season, Drexel has matched its best start since the 1990 season when the Dragons won 10 of their first 12 contests and went on to finish 31-16.
